OpenSceneGraph Adds New Features to 3D Graphics Applications

Skew Matrix Software LLC is pleased to announce a new release of OpenSceneGraph (OSG), the leading cross-platform, open source, OpenGL-based scene graph and application SDK. OSG accelerates development and powers 3D graphics rendering in countless visualization, simulation, virtual reality, DCC, GIS, gaming, and other 3D applications. OSG runs on all Microsoft Windows platforms, Apple OS X, GNU/Linux, IRIX, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and FreeBSD operating systems.
OSG v2.8.5 includes these enhancements.
- Uniform variable performance enhancements.
- Support for OpenGL multisample textures using the GL_ARB_texture_multisample extension.
- OcclusionQueryNode support for multiple parent Camera nodes (including render to texture operations).
- A new command line option for the osgconv application. "--use-world-frame" causes osgconv transformations to operate in the world, rather that the bounding volume, coordinate space.
- New notification macros to avoid inefficiencies in STL stream implementations.
- A new export option for the .OSG file format plugin. "OutputRelativeTextures" exports texture images to a subfolder of the exported model file.
- Several updates and fixes to the .3DS file format plugin.
- Fixes for the .FLT file format plugin, including improved support for multitexturing and Switch records.
- Improvements to the .PNM file format plugin, including stream support, image orientation fixes, and fixes for 8- and 16-bit images.
- Improved text quality in the osgText node kit.
- Other miscellaneous fixes and enhancements.
Version 2.8.5, the latest release in OSG's 10 year history, is the result of contributions from many developers in the worldwide OSG community. The global community is constantly improving OSG by contributing enhancements, bug fixes, testing, and using it daily in numerous commercial, open source, and academic application software projects. The 2.8.5 release is spearheaded by Skew Matrix Software ( http://www.skew-matrix.com/ ).

OSG is released under the OpenSceneGraph Public License, which is based on the Lesser GNU Public License (LGPL), permitting free use of this software across the full spectrum of commercial and open-source applications. It also allows both static and dynamic linking of the OSG libraries without restricting the licensing of the user's software.

The OpenSceneGraph Quick Start Guide is now available in Chinese as well as English, alongside the Reference Manual. Books can be found at the OSGBooks Web site.
The OpenSceneGraph 3.0: Beginner's Guide is also available. It describes the upcoming v3.0 release of OpenSceneGraph and also applies fully to the v2.8.4 release.
